Cold Weather Warning

With freezing temperatures expected in our area, we want to help you prepare and protect your homes, pets, and property. These tips are especially important for customers in Brockdale Estates, the Commons of Camden, and Seis Lagos to prevent damage during this winter weather event.

Protect Your Pipes

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap outdoor and unheated indoor pipes with foam insulation or towels to prevent freezing. Pipes in irrigation systems are particularly vulnerable.¹
  • Drip Faucets: Let both cold and hot water faucets drip slowly to reduce the risk of frozen pipes.¹
  • Open Cabinet Doors: Open cabinets under sinks to allow your home’s heat to reach pipes.²
  • Locate the Shutoff Valve: Know where your water shutoff valve is located to quickly turn off water if a pipe bursts.¹

Safeguard Your Plants

  • Bring Potted Plants Indoors: Move all sensitive potted plants inside to protect them from frost damage.³
  • Cover Outdoor Plants: Use frost covers, blankets, or towels to shield outdoor plants from freezing temperatures.⁴

Care for Your Pets

  • Bring Pets Indoors: If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets. Provide a warm, safe space indoors.³
  • Protect Paws: If your pets must go outside, apply paw balm or petroleum jelly to protect their pads from ice and snow.³

  • Turn Off Sprinklers: Prevent ice from forming on driveways and sidewalks by shutting off sprinkler systems.⁴
  • Keep Walkways Clear: Use sand or non-toxic ice melt to prevent slipping on icy surfaces.⁴

Check Your Roof and Gutters

  • Clear Gutters: Ensure gutters are clear of leaves and debris to prevent ice dams from forming.⁵
  • Inspect Roofs: Check for any pre-existing damage that could worsen with ice or snow accumulation.⁵
